"Fifty Shades of Grey" Musical To Play Off-Broadway! I Gasp.

I think we all knew that a Fifty Shades of Grey musical was inevitable. Thank goodness the one that will premiere at the Gramercy Theater in New York is a satire.

I am not a fan of the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy, to say the least, and its popularity has both surprised and disturbed me on many levels. But I think this musical might be just what the doctor ordered. By emphasizing the ridiculousness of the books, the absurdity will be front and center. Perhaps watching actual people playing these characters, rather than fantasizing about them while reading, fans of the books will realize just how disturbing the story actually is.

There is certainly enough material for clever satire in Fifty Shades of Grey, and I am curious as to what approach will be taken. The aspects of Fifty Shades of Grey that troubled me the most were the objectification of Anastasia and the emotionally abusive aspects of her relationship with Christian.

However, the absurdity of the plot, as well as the atrociously bad quality of writing in the books, also provide a substantial amount of material to satirize.According to Time, the show includes 11 original songs including “They Get Nasty,” “I Don’t Make Love, I “F#*!” and “There’s a Hole Inside of Me.” Given Christian's obsession with Anastasia biting her lip, I wonder if there will be an entire song dedicated to her doing that. If there is, I will certainly roll my eyes.
