Rachel Bloom isn’t afraid to go there – basically, anywhere – and by doing so, she’s giving a voice to women everywhere. The creator and star of the musical TV comedy Crazy Ex-Girlfriend somehow has the ability to say what everyone is thinking – and, on occasion, even sing it.
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, which airs on the CW on Monday nights, finds the fun in excruciatingly uncomfortable moments (physical and mental) of modern life, romance, beauty and sex. Again and again, Bloom has shown her ability to hit the nail on the head.
‘The Sexy Getting Ready Song’
In the premiere episode Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Bloom drew back the curtain on the illusion that women beautify themselves for a night out by soaking in a scented bubble bath before donning silky lingerie. Instead, she exposed the many and sometimes painful treatments women put themselves through in order to look “sexy.” The song is already brilliant, but the scene of her pulling on Spanx while whimpering is a huge bonus.
She Loves to Twirl
Breaking into song and dance is nothing unusual on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend – in fact, it usually happens two or three times an episode. The song “Settle for Me” included an elaborate tap dance, and Bloom donned a period-perfect gown for the shoot. And who doesn’t love to twirl when wearing a long dress?
‘I Can’t Breathe!’
Before going to the Golden Globes, where she won Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Comedy or Musical, Bloom showed her followers on Instagram just what it took to wear the form-fitting dark green dress she chose for the awards show. After singing and dancing to the “Sexy Golden Globies Song,” she said matter-of-factly, “I can’t breathe!”
She Feels Gross After Working Out
Rather than posting a glamorous gym selfie, telling us how #blessed she is for her spin session, Bloom showed us how she really looks after a hip-hop class.
She Showed Everyone Having Big Breasts Isn’t Always Sexy
Bloom recently released the song “Heavy Boobs,” sharing the inconvenient and decidedly unsexy side of being well-endowed. The fast-paced song gives a humorous side to her complaints as well as demonstrating through the choreography how having large breasts can be painful. The lyrics are hilarious and inform us that her “heavy boobs” “Each … have their own memoirs I don’t need an airbag in my car ” – but also shows the realistic side of carrying around big breasts.
