An Interview with Katie Holmes

Joey Potter is all grown up. Katie Holmes was well-known for her starring role on the hit television show Dawson’s Creek as the bookish, hyper-articulate best friend of the title character. The show ended in 2003, but the actress has been remembered as the beautiful tomboy Joey for many years, until she became better known as Mrs. Tom Cruise, the inspiration for the infamous couch-jumping incident on Oprah.In recent years, Holmes has begun to shed those identities and carve out one for herself as an adult actress, complete with several films and a Broadway debut in none other than an Arthur Miller play.Holmes, who has always dreamed of being on Broadway, played a supporting role in the 2008 revival of Arthur Miller’s classic, “All My Sons,” co-starring with John Lithgow, Dianne Wiest and Patrick Wilson. While “All My Sons” was Holmes’ Broadway debut, it was not her first time on stage. As a teen, she appeared in the musicals “Hello, Dolly!” and “Damn Yankees.”Holmes’ performance was generally well-received, with critics saying she “exhibits a girlish exuberance that could serve her well in certain stage roles” and “has a striking physical presence”. The New York Daily News even said, “Dancing with Lithgow, kissing Wilson, she makes you forget about her being Mrs. Tom Cruise.”The audience may have forgotten about Holmes’ famous husband while she was onstage, but he was not about to let her forget about him. Holmes has shared many stories of what an affectionate and devoted husband Cruise is, recently saying, “I think my husband has red roses for me everywhere I go, whenever we travel.”Even if there hadn’t been red roses in her dressing room, Holmes said she enjoyed her time on Broadway and would like to do another play in the future.“I love doing Broadway,” she says, “It’s so much fun and I loved the cast and the community was so welcoming and wonderful. I really appreciated that and I enjoyed every single night so I can’t wait to go back to theater. I don’t know, but I’m very excited to go back.”Even though she hasn’t returned to the Great White Way since 2008, Holmes has kept herself busy sharing her musical talents in other venues. She made an appearance on the show “Eli Stone,” singing a slinky rendition of “Hit Me With a Hot Note” and performed the famous Judy Garland song, “Get Happy” for her charity, the Dizzy Feet Foundation. She also revisited the role of Lola when appearing with husband Cruise in a fundraiser for the A Fine Romance Benefit for The Motion Picture and Television Fund, performing, “Whatever Lola Wants.”With all of her singing and dancing experience, would Holmes ever appear in a musical?“I love to sing and dance, so anytime,” she said.
