Heist

HeistWas that supposed to be funny? That was all I could wonder as I left the Sargent Theatre. I really couldn’t tell, after watching the new play written by Paul Cohen. The story was something about some jewelry thieves robbing a store that was located behind the stage where a woman was performing a show about vaginas. And they had to time their explosive blasts with her orgasms. Or something like that. The plot of the show was fairly straightforward, but for something advertised as “the funniest new play ever written in English,” it was remarkably not funny. The acting was forced and deliberate and every obvious, heavily-played joke landed on the audience like a thud. Where was the comedy in this comedy? The cast tried hard. But apparently the writers did not.
