About Carey

 

Carey Purcell is a New-York based reporter, editor, theater critic and author. She was previously the Features Editor at Playbill.com where she guided a refocus of the site’s coverage to focus more female and nonbinary-related issues and include more diverse representation amongst the contributing freelance writers.

A graduate of Emerson College, where she studied Print and Multimedia Journalism and Writing, Literature and Publishing, Carey has contributed reviews and interviews to The New York Times, Vanity Fair, The New Yorker, Politico, The Guardian, The Nation, American Theatre Magazine, Dame Magazine and numerous other publications.

An alumnus of the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center’s National Critics Institute, Carey’s writing focuses on entertainment, pop culture, politics and current events from a feminist perspective.

Carey is a member of the League of Professional Theatre Women, the American Theatre Critics Association, the Drama Desk and the Outer Critics Circle. 

She has been a featured guest on “TODAY With Megyn Kelly,” “AM Joy” and “Good Morning America.”

Her first book, “From Aphra Behn to Fun Home: A Cultural History of Feminist Theater,” was published by Roman & Littlefield in 2019.

Carey is currently working on her second book, a work of fiction, and is seeking literary representation. She can be followed on Facebook and Instagram.
